Panfish

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Panfish, including species like bluegill, sunfish, and crappie, can be found in a variety of bodies of water throughout the South/Gulf region. These popular game fish thrive in lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers, and even small creeks.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Panfish can be found in a variety of habitats, depending on the species. Bluegill and sunfish are often found near submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and brush piles. They prefer shallow areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, as well as places with ample cover and structure. Crappie, on the other hand, tend to inhabit deeper water near structures such as submerged timber, bridge pilings, and underwater ledges.

  • Look for panfish near docks, piers, and areas with overhanging trees, as these provide shade and cover. They can also be found near weed beds, along the edges of aquatic vegetation, and in areas with a gentle current. Panfish are known to school together, so if you catch one, there's a good chance there are more nearby.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • During the spring, panfish move into shallower waters to spawn. Look for them in areas with submerged vegetation, brush piles, and around the edges of structures. They become more active and readily take various baits and lures during this time.

SUMMER

  • In the summer, panfish tend to seek cooler and deeper waters, particularly during the hottest parts of the day. Look for them near submerged structures such as fallen trees, brush piles, or underwater ledges. Fishing early in the morning or late in the evening can be productive during this season.

FALL

  • As fall arrives, panfish feed more actively to build up energy reserves for the upcoming winter. They may move into shallower areas again, especially near structure and vegetation. Look for panfish near weed beds, submerged logs, or areas with a gentle current.

WINTER

  • During the winter months, panfish become less active and may move to deeper sections of lakes and reservoirs. Look for them near areas with warmer water sources or near submerged structures. Slow presentations with small jigs or live bait can be effective during the colder months.

Bait

  • Common bait options for panfish fishing include live bait such as worms, crickets, or small minnows. Artificial lures like small jigs, spinners,
