STRIPED BASS

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Striped bass, known for their powerful fights and impressive size, can be found in various bodies of water in the Northwest region of the United States. Anglers seeking the excitement of catching striped bass often target them in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Here are some popular locations for striped bass fishing in Oregon and Washington:

  • OREGON:

The Columbia River is renowned for its striped bass fishery in Oregon. The lower sections of the river, particularly around the mouth and estuary, provide excellent opportunities to catch striped bass. Other notable locations include the Umpqua River and Winchester Bay.

  • WASHINGTON: In Washington, the lower sections of the Columbia River, such as the Hanford Reach area, offer prime striped bass fishing. The Snake River and the lower stretches of the Yakima River are also known for their striped bass populations.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Striped bass inhabit a variety of aquatic habitats but are primarily found in large rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries. They prefer areas with structure such as submerged rocks, ledges, drop-offs, and submerged vegetation. Striped bass are migratory fish and often follow the movements of their prey, which can include shad, herring, and other smaller fish.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • During the spring months, striped bass become more active as the water temperature rises. They move into shallower areas to spawn and feed. Look for them near river mouths, tidal flats, or areas with strong current. Fishing with live bait such as shad, herring, or artificial lures such as swimbaits or crankbaits can be effective during this season.

SUMMER

  • In the summer, striped bass tend to seek cooler water and may retreat to deeper areas or areas with structure. They can be found near submerged rock piles, bridge pilings, or areas with strong current. Fishing during low-light periods or at dawn and dusk can be productive. Techniques such as trolling with deep-diving plugs, casting swimbaits, or using live baitfish can entice striped bass to bite.

FALL

  • Fall is an excellent time to target striped bass as they actively feed in preparation for winter. They may be found near tidal channels, river mouths, or areas with strong current. Fishing with topwater lures, jigging spoons, or using live bait such as eels or bunker can yield good results during this season.

WINTER

  • In winter, striped bass activity slows down, and they may move to deeper sections of rivers or reservoirs. They can be found near areas with structure or in deep holes. Fishing with slow presentations such as jigging, using live baitfish, or fishing with swimbaits can be effective in enticing striped bass to bite.

BAIT

  • Striped bass are opportunistic feeders and can be targeted using a variety of baits and lures. Popular options include live bait such as shad, herring, or eels, as well as artificial lures such as swimbaits, crankbaits, spoons, and topwater lures. The choice of bait depends on the fishing conditions, the striped bass's feeding behavior, and angler preference.

  • When selecting lures, consider using patterns that mimic the natural prey fish in the water. Experimenting with different sizes, colors, and retrieval speeds can help trigger striped bass strikes. Additionally, using scent attractants or adding baitfish to your offering can increase your chances of success.
