CARP

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Carp, known for their strength, large size, and adaptability, can be found in various bodies of water in the Northwest region of the United States. Anglers seeking a unique and challenging fishing experience often target carp in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Here are some popular locations for carp fishing in Oregon and Washington:

  • Oregon: The Willamette River, Columbia River, and Snake River are renowned for their carp populations. Additionally, lakes and reservoirs such as Lake Billy Chinook, Fern Ridge Reservoir, and Tenmile Lake offer excellent opportunities to catch carp.

  • Washington: The Columbia River, Snake River, and Yakima River are known for their carp fisheries. Lake Washington and Potholes Reservoir are also popular destinations for targeting carp.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Carp inhabit a variety of aquatic environments and can be found in both still and flowing waters. They are often found in areas with ample vegetation, such as shallow bays, backwaters, and areas with submerged vegetation like lily pads or weed beds. Carp are bottom-feeders and prefer areas with soft bottoms where they can root around for food.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • During spring, carp become more active as water temperatures rise. They move into shallower areas to feed on aquatic vegetation and insects. Look for them in backwaters, shallow bays, or areas with emerging vegetation. Fishing with bait such as corn, bread, or dough balls can be effective during this season.

SUMMER

  • In the summer months, carp can be found in a variety of habitats, including deeper sections of rivers, open-water areas of lakes, or near structures such as bridge pilings or submerged logs. They may seek out cooler areas or areas with current. Using a combination of natural bait and boilies, or fishing with carp-specific rigs, can yield good results.

FALL

  • Fall is a productive time to target carp as they feed heavily to build up energy for the winter months. They may be found in areas with abundant food sources, such as backwaters, shallow bays, or areas with fallen leaves. Using a mix of natural baits, such as corn or worms, along with carp-specific baits or boilies, can be effective.

WINTER

  • In winter, carp become less active, and they may move to deeper sections of rivers or areas with warmer water. Look for them near thermal discharges, deep holes, or areas with submerged structures. Fishing with natural baits presented close to the bottom or using specialized carp rigs can be effective during this season.

Bait

  • Carp can be targeted using a variety of baits and techniques. Popular bait options include corn, bread, dough balls, worms, or boilies. These baits can be fished on the bottom using a variety of rigs, such as a hair rig or a method feeder rig. Experimenting with different flavors, scents, and presentations can help you determine what works best for carp in your chosen water body.
