Panfish

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Perch and panfish are found in most bodies of water, from small streams and ponds, to larger rivers and lakes. These fish are also found in tidal rivers and brackish water.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Generally found near shallower structures.

  • Often hide near weed-lines and submerged structure.

  • Look for fish in deeper holes that provide protection.

  • Under docks, pilings, rockpiles.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • Panfish and perch are moving from deeper water preparing to spawn. Spawning occurs in shallower water near protected weedlines often on softer bottoms. Look for panfish beds where circles are created within the sand or gravel for these fish to lay eggs.

SUMMER

  • As it gets warmer these smaller fish will often move deeper and find protected holes made of gravel, sand or softer bottoms. Weedlines, docks and submerged structure will usually be a good place to find panfish.

FALL

  • Fish will move around feeding more actively so be prepared to search a variety of environments for them

WINTER

  • Like most fish perch and panfish will often move deeper, try locating them with electronics and use smaller jigs fished vertically.

  • Note: Crappie are generally found in deeper locations, try locating crappie holes with electronics around drop offs.

Bait

  • Worms, Insects.
