Catfish

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Where to find catfish? Catfish are located in most ponds, lakes, reseviors, streams, rivers, or brackish rivers.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Deep Holes: Catfish can be found in deep holes, such as those found in rivers and lakes, where they can be caught using bottom-fishing techniques

  • look for channels, drop-offs, and ledges.

  • Muddy waters that offer hiding areas for catfish

  • Logs and stumps: Catfish can be found around logs and stumps in the water, where they use these structures as cover and to ambush prey.

  • Currents

  • Submerged structure: Catfish can be found around submerged structure, such as bridge pilings, dams and other man-made structures.

  • Backwaters and coves: Catfish can be found in the backwaters and coves of a lake or reservoir, where they can be caught using various baits

  • Will feed in shallow locations and mud flats.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • Catfish are becoming more active as the water warms, they will move shallow to feed and spawn, and spend time in deeper water locations. Try finding current and drop-offs

SUMMER

  • As it gets warmer catfish will become the most active and will feed in a variety of habitats, such as deep holes, drop-offs, and ledges, where they can be caught using bottom-fishing techniques. Focus on moving water and currents. Fallen logs, structures, and grass hold fish

FALL

  • As the water temperature begins to drop in the fall, catfish will begin to move into deeper waters where the water temperature is warmer, and their activity will slow down.

  •

WINTER

  • Winter-Found in deeper water with less currents. Locate deep holes and dropoffs.

Bait

  • Cut Bait: Cut bait such as shad, herring, and bluegills are very effective for catching catfish. These baits can be fished on the bottom or suspended under a bobber

  • Live Bait: Live bait such as worms, minnows, and crayfish can also be very effective for catching catfish. These baits can be used to imitate the natural prey of the fish and can be particularly effective when fishing in clear water or when the fish are not actively feeding

  • Prepared Baits: Prepared baits such as catfish dough balls, dip baits and gels can be effective when targeting catfish. These baits are formulated to mimic the scent and taste of natural food sources and can be used in various ways such as on a bottom rig or under a bobber

  • Chicken Livers

  • Fish parts: Fish parts such as heads, tails, and wings can also be used as bait for catfish. These baits can be fished on the bottom or suspended under a bobber.
