Carp

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Carp are a widespread species in the Northeastern United States and can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and even canals.

  • They can also be found in brackish water of estuaries and tidal flats.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • Found traveling near shorelines searching for food.

  • Often feed on the bottom.

  • Search near drop-offs, and weedlines.

  • They are often found in areas with slow-moving water, such as backwaters, and the back channels of rivers. They can also be found in areas with heavy vegetation, such as lily pads and cattails.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • Great time to find carp in shallower water as they move from deeper locations.

  • As water temperatures begin to rise, carp will start to move into shallower waters to spawn. The exact timing of spawning can vary depending on the location and the weather conditions, but typically occurs when water temperatures reach around 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

SUMMER

  • Carp can be found in a variety of habitats, such as shallow flats, weed beds, and other areas with plenty of food

  • Target areas near structure where carp can hide, such as weed-lines and fallen trees.

FALL

  • Fish are preparing for winter and will actively search for food.

  • Carp will begin to move into deeper waters where the water temperature is warmer, and their activity will slow down.

WINTER

  • Slow moving fish will be more difficult to find so search around different locations.

Bait

  • hot dogs, Corn.

  • Distribute extra bait in fishing location to chum in carp. During the winter months limit extra chum used as fish will not travel far and you do not want to over feed.
