Techniques
Surf Fishing
How: Surf fishing for sharks involves casting baits from the beach into the ocean. It is important to use strong gear, heavy weights, and sturdy rods to handle the power of these creatures. Here are some tips to get started:
Gear: Use a heavy surf rod with a strong backbone and fast action. The reel should have a high line capacity and a strong drag system. The line should be at least 50-pound test and the leader should be made of steel wire with a minimum of 100-pound test. Hooks: 9/0 or larger
Chumming
Chumming involves creating a scent trail to attract sharks to the boat. This technique is commonly used in offshore fishing for larger sharks, Check local laws if attempting to chum from shore.
Gear: Use a heavy conventional rod with a fast action and strong backbone. The reel should have a high line capacity and a strong drag system. The line should be at least 80-pound test and the leader should be made of steel wire with a minimum of 200-pound test. Hooks: 9/0 or larger.
