Largemouth Bass

LOCATIONS

BODIES OF WATER

  • Largemouth bass can be found in a variety of bodies of water throughout the Mid Atlantic region, including lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and ponds. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in both freshwater and brackish water environments.

STRUCTURE/HABITAT

  • What type of structure is in the water? Fallen Trees, Logs, rocks, docks, weeds, boathouses are all visible structure

  • Structure is related to the body of water and what is underneath. Points, dropoffs, ledges, weedlines are part of the environmental structure but not readily visible. A fish finder is bet for locating natural structure however not needed. To identify natural structure points, and dropoffs without a fish finder pay attention to the surrounding shorelines for any clues. Is it a steep and rocky shoreline? Natural points off the land tend to have dropoffs on either side. Do bodies of water merge? You can also use google maps and online depth charts to learn the underwater structure.

  • Largemouth Bass are commonly found in areas with cover such as logs, rocks, weed beds, and brush piles. They also like to hide around structure such as boat docks, piers, and bridges. They are also known to congregate around underwater humps, points, and drop-offs.

  • Focus on all these types of structures and adapt your fishing technique and presentation to whichever environmental structure you encounterwhile fishing.

PATTERNS

SPRING

  • Spawning occurs. Generally the best months of the year are April and May. Fish are moving shallow to build spawning beds. Look for circular beds in mud, sand, or gravel in shallows and around protected structure. Generally fish will be guarding these beds. Work cover and transition points between shallows and deep.

SUMMER

  • In the summer, largemouth bass tend to move to slightly deeper waters, particularly around submerged structures and drop-offs. They may seek cooler areas with vegetation or concentrate near areas with abundant food sources. Fishing early in the morning or late in the evening can be productive during this season.

FALL

  • As fall arrives, largemouth bass become more active and feed aggressively to build up energy reserves for the upcoming winter. They may move to shallower areas again, especially near submerged vegetation, rocky points, and creek mouths. Use a variety of baits and techniques to entice them.

WINTER

  • Fish have slowed down and moved deeper. Target points, dropoffs, and submerged structures. Slow down retrieve for lures and plastics.
